Woman dies after collapse in New Orleans Parish jail’s psych unit

by Laura Maggi, The Times-Picayune

A 43-year-old woman died this week after she collapsed in the jail’s psychiatric unit while in restraints, a spokesman for the Orleans Parish criminal sheriff’s office said Friday.

Cayne Miceli was arrested Sunday afternoon on municipal charges at Tulane Medical Center, where she had been treated for severe asthma, according to records and interviews with friends. After she was discharged, Miceli caused a “disturbance” and bit a Tulane University police officer, according to municipal court records.

She was booked with battery of a police officer, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace.

Miceli’s unusual death led friends to question both the medical treatment she received at the hospital and her subsequent experience at the jail.

“She turned to a system that she felt she could trust and this is what happened, ” said Steve Picou, a friend.

The Orleans Parish coroner’s office has not ruled on what caused Miceli’s death, which was reported to the office by University Hospital on Tuesday, said John Gagliano, the chief investigator. Gagliano said the office is awaiting toxicology reports, which will not be available for three weeks.

Friends described Miceli as a vivacious and gregarious woman who suffered from severe asthma and battled emotional and mental troubles. On Sunday, she went to Tulane Medical Center because she was having trouble breathing, friends said.

Officials with Tulane confirmed that she was treated for a “clinical concern, ” which the hospital would not specify, then discharged. At some point after she was discharged, Miceli caused a scene and bit a university officer just outside the waiting room, said Kim Graham, vice president of nursing. As per policy, hospital officials called New Orleans police, she said. Read More

5 Reasons Why We Must Keep Fighting After Bush Leaves Office

January 12, 2009 By: Freedom Fighter Category: liberty No Comments →

1. The damage done to constitutional protections, civil liberties, and human rights is extensive. Repairing the damage will be a long slow process, especially with the new administration focusing on the economy and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
2. Historically, executive powers are often expanded but rarely reduced. It takes enormous pressure from the people to convince Congress and the President to reinstate the checks and balances required by the Constitution.
3. Congress has been complicit in the Bush administration’s constitutional violations. To reverse these policies, implemented in the name of the “war on terror,” we must educate our congressional representatives and hold them accountable to their oaths to protect and defend the Constitution.
4. President-Elect Obama has promised to close Guantánamo Bay detention center, but creating a process for trying and releasing the more than 250 remaining prisoners that is constitutional, timely, and safe will be complicated and difficult after years of the Bush administration’s fear-mongering. We must provide vocal support for such efforts to counteract this culture of fear.
5. If we don’t fight to undo the damage to civil liberties, human rights, and other constitutional protections now, it will only get worse in the future.

Proposed Law May Allow Obama AG Holder to “Ban Guns at Will”

January 12, 2009 By: Freedom Fighter Category: gun control, gun rights No Comments →

A perfect storm is developing for Second Amendment opponents that could allow President-elect Barack Obama’s choice for attorney general – Eric Holder – to “ban guns at will” despite the 2008 affirmation from the U.S. Supreme Court that U.S. citizens have a right to bear arms.

The situation was described with alarm by Alan Korwin, author of Gun Laws of America, in a recent commentary.

He cited Holder’s known support for gun bans – the former Clinton administration official endorsed the District of Columbia’s complete ban on functional guns in residents’ homes before it was overturned by the Supreme Court.

And Korwin pointed to overwhelming Democratic majorities in Congress as well as Obama’s known support for gun restrictions and his presence in the Oval Office.

Thirdly, Korwin, one of many Second Amendment advocates raising concerns, cited a proposal already submitted to Congress at a time when its backers could not reasonably expect it to succeed.

The submission is H.R. 1022 by New York Democrat Carolyn McCarthy and 67 co-sponsors. It was introduced in February 2007 and the next month referred to the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security, where it has stayed.

But that could change in the 111th Congress, sworn in today. And Korwin said the plan would allow the U.S. Attorney General – possibly Holder – to add to the list of guns banned to the public any “semiautomatic rifle or shotgun originally designed for military or law enforcement use, or a firearm based on the design of such a firearm, that is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, as determined by the Attorney General.”

“Note that … Holder … wrote a brief in the (District of Columbia) Heller case supporting the position that you have no right to have a working firearm in your own home,” Korwin said.

Powerful Solar Storm Could Shut Down U.S. for Months

January 11, 2009 By: Freedom Fighter Category: general news Comments Off

Source: Fox News

A new study from the National Academy of Sciences outlines grim possibilities on Earth for a worst-case scenario solar storm.

Damage to power grids and other communications systems could be catastrophic, the scientists conclude, with effects leading to a potential loss of governmental control of the situation.

The prediction is based in part on a major solar storm in 1859 that caused telegraph wires to short out in the United States and Europe, igniting widespread fires.

It was perhaps the worst in the past 200 years, according to the new study, and with the advent of modern power grids and satellites, much more is at risk.

“A contemporary repetition of the [1859] event would cause significantly more extensive (and possibly catastrophic) social and economic disruptions,” the researchers conclude. (more…)

Bush ordered ceasefire retreat at UN

January 11, 2009 By: Freedom Fighter Category: foreign policy Comments Off

Condoleezza Rice, the US Secretary of State, was forced to step back from voting in favor of the Gaza ceasefire resolution at the UN Security Council after orders from Washington, diplomatic sources said yesterday.

The US abstention on the resolution vote early yesterday, which clearly weakened its impact, was the final twist in a tumultuous three-day marathon of negotiations in New York.
For the UN to do nothing in the face of the mounting civilian casualties was becoming increasingly untenable. But when three of the world’s top diplomats – Ms Rice, David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, and his French counterpart, Bernard Kouchner – descended on New York on Tuesday to take action there was plenty of reason to believe that their efforts would end in tears.

Most alarming was the prospect of a vote on a ceasefire text tabled by Libya. The US was threatening to veto it; nor indeed was America ready at that point to support any formal resolution in deference to Israel. But by Thursday morning, the US had had a surprising change of heart. It could back a resolution, if the British drafted one. Which Mr Miliband and his diplomatic crew duly did.

It fell to Mr Miliband, above all, to bring everyone on side before the council could hold a vote sometime Thursday evening. He, M. Kouchner and Ms Rice spent all day shuttling with knitted brows in and out of a conference room in the basement of the UN building where Arab foreign ministers were huddled. By dusk, it seemed at last that everyone was on board. Mr Miliband was smiling.

“Nothing is in the bag at the UN until everything is in the bag,” one senior British official was heard remarking. Indeed. Once more the deal threatened to unravel as Americans muttered about new amendments and the French asked to delay the vote to give Israel time to consider its position. The Arabs almost rebelled. “It was hairy there for a moment,” one source admitted.

When finally every last hurdle was cleared and the members of the Security Council were headed to their chamber for the vote, there was a mood of celebration in the building. Ministers from Arab nations especially were slapping backs. It was only in the last minutes before the vote was due that word began suddenly to circulate. America was not going to vote in favour after all.

It was no secret that Ms Rice had been on the phone with Washington and with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert all day. This was no run-of-the-mill vote, after all. The call that changed everything apparently came just as ministers and ambassadors were taking their seats in the council chamber. It was President George Bush for Ms Rice. Don’t veto the resolution, he said, but don’t vote for it either.

As Mr Miliband left later for the airport and the flight home, he could take heart, perhaps, from what Ms Rice said in the chamber. America supported the text and its goals, she insisted. And yet, the US could not vote for it because of that other special relationship it has; with Israel.

New Orleans cops shoot man 12 times in the back

Andrew McLemore

A young, black man in New Orleans is dead, slain by police officers on New Year’s Day, in an incident that has outraged a community and triggered protests over what family members are calling a “murder.”

.

The New Orleans man, 22-year-old Adolph Grimes III, traveled to his grandmother’s home near the French Quarter in order to celebrate New Year’s Eve with his fiance and their 17-month-old son. Three hours after arrival, around 3 a.m., he was found dead a block from the front door.

The Orleans Parish coroner said Grimes was shot 14 times, including 12 times in the back.

“This violence has to stop. My child’s death will not be meaningless. He did not die in vain,” said Grimes’ mother, Patricia Grimes.

An editorial in The Times-Picayune said the shooting “demands answers.”

Despite the fact that the seven officers involved in the incident have been reassigned, Superintendent Warren Riley has refused to answer “fundamental questions” about the shooting and maintains that Grimes fired upon his men first.

Several dozen people protested the New Orleans Police Department on Thursday morning to demand justice for Grimes’ death.

A mix of people walked paced in front of a police station carrying signs with slogans like “Down with the government” and shouting to passers-by “You could be next!”

A group of black ministers and advocates has called for the department to be purged of “trigger-happy” officers and the Grimes family’s attorney, Richard Jenkins is certain an investigation will show rogue cops and sloppy police work.

“I just think it was some bad officers who were out there and imposing their will on the community,” Jenkins said.

The shooting of Grimes by the NOPD marks the third high media incident of an officer or officers shooting a seemingly innocent black male thus far in 2009.

In Oakland, Calif, a BART officer shot a 22-year-old black male in the back on New Year’s Eve. The slaying was caught on multiple videos, all of which showed the man unarmed, subdued and helpless. The city is still struggling to contain the public’s reaction to what appears to be an execution.

Also, in Houston, a 23-year-old black male was shot in his own home’s driveway by a white police officer during the early hours of New Year’s Eve. According to published reports, the officer thought the man’s vehicle was stolen. An internal investigation is underway. While the department has denied allegations of racial profiling related to the shooting, no effort to explain why the officer suspected the vehicle to be stolen has been offered.

Sarkozy, Merkel, Blair call for new global order

January 09, 2009 By: Freedom Fighter Category: GLOBALISM, new world order No Comments →

Source: Associated Press

PARIS – The leaders of France and Germany appeared to put disagreements over economic policy behind them Thursday, calling on the U.S. to join global efforts to address the financial crisis.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, leading a two-day conference with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair on the future of capitalism, said the crisis has shown that no country can go it alone on economic policy.

“In the 21st century, there it is no longer a single nation who can say what we should do or what we should think,” he said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the system “cannot continue as it is” and called for better-regulated financial markets.

European leaders will meet in Berlin before the G-20 summit in London to decide a common approach as global leaders gear up for a second meeting on the global financial crisis, Sarkozy said.

Measures will be taken at the G-20 meeting in London on April 2, Sarkozy promised, saying “we cannot accept the status quo.”

He called for closer cooperation on economic policy, saying: “We should discuss how each of us is managing his currency, his interest rates.”

The leaders of France and Germany have differed in the past over how much government support Europe’s economy needs.

Merkel deplored huge debts that governments are accumulating to spend their way out of the present crisis. But she said she recognized, for the moment, that “there is no other possibility.”

Leaders should look beyond financial markets, she said, singling out the American budget deficit and China’s current account surplus — or trade balance — as problems upsetting the global economy.

A Congressional Budget Office report estimates that the U.S. federal budget deficit will hit an unparalleled $1.2 trillion for the 2009 budget year — and that is before President-elect Barack Obama’s sweeping stimulus package is calculated.

European governments have agreed to be flexible about budget rules that limit deficits to 3 percent of gross domestic product as recession bites. Merkel is planning an extra stimulus of up to euro50 billion ($70 billion) and Sarkozy said Thursday that he is considering additional measures.

French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde said Thursday that Paris is planning to inject a second tranche of euro10.5 billion into some of the nation’s largest banks in an effort to spur lending.

Merkel said the International Monetary Fund has not managed to regulate global capitalism, and she called for the creation of an economy body at the United Nations, similar to the Security Council, to judge government policy.

Speaking at the conference, European Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said “global rules” on government aid to companies would be “helpful.”

“A closer network of competition systems is slowly emerging after decades of work,” she said.

Sarkozy blamed financial speculators for encouraging a system fueled on debt. He called financial capitalism based on speculation “an immoral system” that has “perverted the logic of capitalism.”

“It’s a system where wealth goes to the wealthy, where work is devalued, where production is devalued, where entrepreneurial spirit is devalued,” he said.

But no more: “In capitalism of the 21st century, there is room for the state,” he said.

Blair called for a new financial order based on “values other than the maximum short-term profit.”

“The greatest entrepreneur I had the chance to meet was passionate about what he had created, not what he had accumulated,” he said.

Trans-Texas Corridor name dies, but not entire concept

January 08, 2009 By: Freedom Fighter Category: nau, soverieignty No Comments →

Work will continue on I-35, I-69 pieces of original plan of cross-state tollways, railways and utility lines, officials say.

AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF

The Trans-Texas Corridor, as a name and as a guiding concept of the state’s transportation future, is dead, Texas Department of Transportation Executive Director Amadeo Saenz told an audience of more than a thousand people Tuesday at an Austin hotel. But Saenz acknowledged that all elements of the original plan, including a tollway twin to Interstate 35, could be built as stand-alone projects if and when they are deemed necessary.

Gov. Rick Perry in 2002 unveiled with great fanfare the corridor plan as an almost $200 billion blueprint for the state’s transportation future and then took withering criticism for it in a tough 2006 re-election race. On Tuesday, he said, “The days of the Trans-Texas Corridor are over.”

Critics of the corridor plan and TxDOT officials differed Tuesday over whether the body is truly cold and what would constitute the death of the proposed network of cross-state tollways, railways and utility lines. Planning and environmental studies of the twin to I-35, which would run from San Antonio to Oklahoma, and of I-69 , from Brownsville to Texarkana, will not stop, officials said. Read More

It Has Already Started Ammunition Accountability Legislation - If they can deprive you of ammo they do not need to take your gun!

January 07, 2009 By: Freedom Fighter Category: gun control, gun rights Comments Off

FORWARD TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH!

WE MUST STOP THIS IN IT’S TRACKS!!

IN FORM THOSE YOU KNOW IN STATES INVOLVED!!
DO IT NOW!!!

Subject: No one can sell any ammunition after June 30, 2009

It has already started… Ammunition Accountability Legislation

Remember how Obama said that he wasn’t going to take your guns? Well, it seems that his allies in the anti-gun world have no problem with taking your ammo!

The bill that is being pushed in 18 states (including Illinois and Indiana) requires all ammunition to be encoded by the manufacture a data base of all ammunition sales. So they will know how much you buy and what calibers.
No one can sell any ammunition after June 30, 2009 unless the ammunition is coded.

Any privately held uncoded ammunition must be destroyed by July 1, 2011. (Including hand loaded ammo.) They will also charge a .05 cent tax on every round so every box of ammo you buy will go up at least $2.50 or more!

If they can deprive you of ammo they do not need to take your gun!

This legislation is currently pending in 18 states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Washington.

Send to your friends in these states AND fight to dissolve this BILL!!

“This case is not even four days cold. We’re in the early stages of the investigation and we will do a very thorough job,” he said.

Several unanswered questions remained after BART officers went to Oakland’s Fruitvale station to investigate reports of a supposed brawl on a train on which Grant was riding around 2 a.m. Thursday. Read More

Lockheed Martin to build High Altitude Airship for homeland security

January 06, 2009 By: Freedom Fighter Category: general news No Comments →

Although it’s not exactly shocking to hear of yet another homeland security application that seems to border on Big Brother, Lockheed Martin’s High Altitude Airship could keep an elevated eye on 600 miles of US countryside at any given time, and if all goes as planned, we’ll have 11 of these things floating over our everyday activities by the end of the decade. The HAA prototype is a ginormous airship that measures 17-times larger than the Goodyear rendition we’re all used to seeing above sporting events, and is designed to hover 12 miles above the earth in order to keep tabs on what’s happening below. The airship is slated to be solar-powered and should stay in a geocentric orbit for “up to a year,” and if equipped with high-resolution cameras, a single one could cover everything “between Toledo, Ohio and New York City.” While Lockheed Martin is thrilled with the $40 million project they’ve been awarded, it’s certainly understandable to get a little worried about how these blimps will actually be used, but Read More

There are so many things that We The People need to protest. It is clear that changes will not be made until we take a stand. We need protests like that of Martin Luther King Jr. in the 60’s. Like the issues of those days, changes were not made until the American people united in protest. This is that time for us, now. No matter your issue, this is the time to take a stand for what you believe in. If the founders of this nation knew that 200 years down the road the American People would not take a stand to correct the problems that our corrupted, greedy politicians have created they would be ashamed. Don’t let them down!
There are many people with differing viewpoints on certain issues but it vitally important to put aside our differences and keep the peace and unite under the banner of Freedom.
We need to have a date that we all will connect on the same day against our city halls, court houses,Govt facilities, financial institutions and yes even the Church s who refuse to take a stand and finally last but not least the homes of those elected employees who are Raping America of its’ Freedom and selling it out to the Global elite. Our rally cry should be ” Not No But Hell No”

We will neither be silent nor submit,we will resist,we will dissent,we will fight we will win.

Now You Have No Excuse To Be UnArmed

January 04, 2009 By: Freedom Fighter Category: gun rights No Comments →

Jim Stachowiak (host of Freedom Fighter Radio.net)

Are you tight for money and want a simple rifle? Say, something capable of a 1000 meter shot? I have been researching a lot of gun forums for the ultimate rifle that meets these standards: cheap, powerful, accurate, battle tested and can easily be modified.

Surprisingly, even while people are stockpiling fire arms, there is a rifle that meets all of these standards that I would recommend for anyone that just can’t afford much of anything for any reason. After reviewing all the information, I believed at one point that one could only afford a .22LR rifle, which fires a bullet the length of a quarter and did not have much penetrating power. To my surprise I found a rifle that can be found at just about any fire arms dealer nationwide, and for under $200, you can have a cleaning kit, bayonet, ammunition and firearm ready for whatever purpose you need.
The M44 Mosin-Nagant is a Russian bolt action, internal magazine fed, shoulder fired infantry/sniper rifle that fires a 7.62 X 54mm cartridge with a maximum effective range of 2000 meters! This cartridge is easily found, and if you know where to look, you can find 2000 rounds for under $150.

Please allow these facts to sink in: the ballistics of such a round is usually clocked in at 2700 feet per second. At this speed, the 7.62 cartridge is capable of killing a deer-sized animal at a distance of 1500 meters without much of a problem. With 37 million M44s on the world market, you will not have much trouble finding one and it won’t empty your pockets buying this simple, yet effective rifle.

Modifications for such a rifle aren’t hard to make. Feel free to drill a couple holes in the wood stock to allow rail mounts for scopes and bipods. With such a cheap and accurate rifle, I am suprised that it isn’t used much for hunting.

At the price range between $90-$140, one cannot simply just ignore the existence of such a brilliantly engineered masterpiece, which dates as far back as 1891 Tzarist Russia.

Please feel free to do your own research.

The research arm of the US Department of Justice is working on two portable non-lethal weapons that inflict pain from a distance using beams of laser light or microwaves, with the intention of putting them into the hands of police to subdue suspects.

Rubicon in the Rear-View: Militarizing the Police

There are those who still think they are holding the pass against a revolution that may be coming up the road. But they are gazing in the wrong direction. The revolution is behind them.

~ Garet Garrett, The Revolution Was (1938)

The seamless integration of the military and law enforcement into a single “Internal Security Force” is the defining characteristic of a fully realized police state. Once this fusion is accomplished, the question becomes not “whether” a police state exists, but rather how acute its institutional violence against the subject population will become.

That condition now exists in the country that still calls itself – without any apparent irony – the United States of America. Read More

Icleland’s political leaders forced from the airwaves by angry citizens this New Years Eve

January 01, 2009 By: Freedom Fighter Category: general news Comments Off

These Icelandic protesters know how to throw it down and so the question is. Why cant Americans get just as angry? This protest in Iceland of 500 would be the equivalent of 500,000 here in America as their population is around 300,000 and ours is 300,000,000.

REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) — A nationally televised meeting between Iceland’s prime minister and other political leaders was forced off the air Wednesday night when angry protesters disrupted the broadcast.

For more than two decades, the leaders of Iceland’s political parties have met every New Year’s Eve over champagne and spiced herring to talk about the year ahead on Iceland’s Channel 2 television.

But this year’s show with Prime Minister Geir Haarde was cut short 45 minutes into the program when a torch-wielding crowd stormed Reykjavik’s Hotel Borg in an attempt to get to the studio.

Protesters inside and outside the hotel clashed with police, who fired pepper spray to disperse the 500-strong crowd. Some demonstrators threw water balloons, while others tossed firecrackers.

At one point, the broadcaster’s television cables caught fire, interrupting the live broadcast. The program cut to commercials, followed by an announcement that Channel 2’s equipment had been damaged and the show would be suspended.

Outside the hotel, a policeman hit on the head with a brick had to be hospitalized. Three protesters were arrested.

The disruption was the latest in a series of demonstrations that have rocked Iceland since the country’s economy imploded this fall under a mammoth load of bad debt. Unemployment has increased and inflation has soared.

Demonstrations have been largely peaceful — some protesters were reportedly invited in for coffee when they showed up at President Olafur Grimsson’s home earlier this month.

But other events have been violent. Icelandic authorities used tear gas for the first time since 1949 when a huge crowd tried to storm a police station in Reykjavik in November, and on Dec. 18, protesters smashed the windows of the country’s financial watchdog agency.
