A US sergeant became on Monday the second non-commissioned officer to be convicted of murder for the summary executions of four bound and blindfolded prisoners in Iraq in 2007.

Sergeant First Class Joseph P. Mayo told a court martial in Germany that the men of Middle Eastern appearance were shot in the back of the head with nine-millimetre pistols and their bodies dumped in a Baghdad canal.

“I thought it (the executions) was in the best interests of my soldiers,” Mayo told the court in Vilseck, Germany after pleading guilty to murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

He said that the men had been arrested after a number of attacks on their unit, and that in the same building troops had found two sniper rifles, AK-47 assault rifles and a duffel bag full of ammunition.

According to documents quoted by the New York Times, the US soldiers were told by superiors to release the men for lack of evidence.

CEDAR RAPIDS - A pop machine exploded in SW Cedar Rapids on Monday morning, sending debris flying over 100 feet.
The Cedar Rapids Bomb Squad say an explosive device was placed inside a pop machine between two apartment complexes at 5651 and 5643 Kirkwood Blvd SW. It exploded around 6:00 a.m. No one was injured, but three nearby vehicles were damaged.

One man who had two cars hit by the flying shrapnel says it was lucky he wasn’t standing outside when the bomb went off.

“I just happened to pull the curtain back and I saw a flash and a big boom and it scared the crap out of me,” said Ahban Ayers, apartment resident.

Ayers estimated damage to one of his cars at $300-$400. He says he can remember other small time vandalism incidents at the complex, but nothing like this.

There are two reward possibilities for persons with information that leads to the arrest of those responsible for this incident. The first is Crime Stoppers at 1-800-CR-CRIME. Callers remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward. The second is an Arson Hotline at 1-800-532-1459, Arrest Arson in Iowa. This is a $15,000 reward fund. Anonymous tips are welcome and are qualified for reward nomination. They can also call the Cedar Fire Department with information at 286-5241 and still be eligible for the reward.

Waterboarding Produced False Leads, Officials Say

Detainee’s Harsh Treatment Foiled No Plots
Waterboarding, Rough Interrogation of Abu Zubaida Produced False Leads, Officials Say
When CIA officials subjected their first high-value captive, Abu Zubaida, to waterboarding and other harsh interrogation methods, they were convinced that they had in their custody an al-Qaeda leader who knew details of operations yet to be unleashed, and they were facing increasing pressure from the White House to get those secrets out of him.

The methods succeeded in breaking him, and the stories he told of al-Qaeda terrorism plots sent CIA officers around the globe chasing leads.

In the end, though, not a single significant plot was foiled as a result of Abu Zubaida’s tortured confessions, according to former senior government officials who closely followed the interrogations. Nearly all of the leads attained through the harsh measures quickly evaporated, while most of the useful information from Abu Zubaida — chiefly names of al-Qaeda members and associates — was obtained before waterboarding was introduced, they said.

Moreover, within weeks of his capture, U.S. officials had gained evidence that made clear they had misjudged Abu Zubaida. President George W. Bush had publicly described him as “al-Qaeda’s chief of operations,” and other top officials called him a “trusted associate” of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and a major figure in the planning of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. None of that was accurate, the new evidence showed.
