Wichita, KS – Today the Wichita Eagle ran a front-page story about threats of violence against Operation Rescue and other pro-life groups. We have posted it below for your convenience.

“We refuse to cower to these threats and have reported them to the appropriate authorities,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “We will not succumb to fear or be intimidated into silence.”

We are posting the names and e-mail addresses of some who have e-mailed us. If they are going to make threats like this, they should be ready to have everyone know they did it.

“In spite of threats against us, we will be reaching out to the community this weekend to pray for peace and memorialize those who have succumbed to abortion violence, both inside and outside the womb,” said Newman.

Operation Rescue is taking extraordinary security precautions to insure the safety of all participants, including hiring off-duty Wichita Police officers.

“Let’s show the world that, as Christians, we will not shirk back in fear, but will boldly proclaim the Gospel of Peace and Reconciliation, as our Lord commands,” said Newman.

Several states and the District of Columbia are tracking down smokers who buy cheaper cigarettes out of their jurisdictions and have even begun tax-collection procedures that can end in liens put against the offender’s property.

Ohio and Pennsylvania have been particularly aggressive in trying to collect money from smokers who dodge local tobacco taxes by purchasing cigarettes online, from Indian reservations or from states with lower taxes.

In the District, the Office of Tax and Revenue has mailed notices demanding that cigarette buyers pay the D.C. sales tax on their past purchases via the Consumer Use tax return - an order that, if ignored, can provide the legal basis to seize a person’s home.

Natalie Wilson, a public affairs specialist for the tax office, said Thursday that 49 notices have been mailed requesting payment of $31,593, of which $17,370 has been received. Other jurisdictions such as Pennsylvania have filed liens against the homes of tax delinquents, though D.C. hasn’t gone that far yet.

PHOENIX — A Mesa homeowner used a shotgun to defend himself during a home invasion late Wednesday night, authorities said. According to Mesa Police Department spokesman Sgt. Ed Wessing, two men armed with guns and demanding money forced their way into the home near Stapley Road and Southern Avenue. The intruders rounded up the four men who live there and forced them into a room, Wessing said.

An inventory of potentially deadly pathogens at Fort Detrick’s infectious disease laboratory found more than 9,000 vials that had not been accounted for, Army officials said yesterday, raising concerns that officials wouldn’t know whether dangerous toxins were missing.

After four months of searching about 335 freezers and refrigerators at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Frederick, investigators found 9,220 samples that hadn’t been included in a database of about 66,000 items listed as of February, said Col. Mark Kortepeter, the institute’s deputy commander.

The vials contained some dangerous pathogens, among them the Ebola virus, anthrax bacteria and botulinum toxin, and less lethal agents such as Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus and the bacterium that causes tularemia. Most of them, forgotten inside freezer drawers, hadn’t been used in years or even decades. Officials said some serum samples from hemorrhagic fever patients dated to the Korean War.

Kortepeter likened the inventory to cleaning out the attic and said he knew of no plans for an investigation into how the vials had been left out of the database

Members of the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) who participated in what an official report later described as a “police riot” during the 1968 Democratic National Convention are planning to get together next week to reminisce about the good times and set the record straight on “what really happened.”

FOP president Mark Donahue insists, “It’s just a get-together for guys who worked together 40 years ago. Nothing more.” However, the group’s own statements indicate that the reunion is intended as a political statement.

As the official Chicago Riot Cops website explains, “The time has come that the Chicago Police be honored and recognized for their contributions to maintaining law and order - and for taking a stand against Anarchy. The time was the hot summer month of August ‘68. The Democratic National Convention was about to start and the only thing that stood between Marxist street thugs and public order was a thin blue line of dedicated, tough Chicago police officers.”

The site offers information for those wishing to attend the reunion, along with a nostalgia-laden photo section featuring baton-wielding police officers cracking the skulls of demonstrators.

Last Thursday, a swarm of police officers descended on Michael Salman’s northwest Phoenix home. Armed officers herded Salman, his wife Suzanne, their five young daughters, and their visiting friends into the living room — and kept them under watch for 90 minutes while other city officials searched the grounds.

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – A bomb squad used a disrupter gun to blast a suspicious package left on the counter of the Leavenworth post office, but only a Bible was found inside. Police said the person who left the package on Friday night took off in a hurry and probably didn’t put enough stamps on it to get it delivered.

The woman to whom the package was sent to said she was expecting something from a relative who had been acting a little strange. But she had no idea what it was.

The package and the Bible were taken as evidence.

No injuries were reported.

Obama looks like hes an expert at eating hotdogs

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama, under growing criticism for not seeking to end the ban on openly gay men and women in the military, is extending benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees. Obama plans to announce his decision on Wednesday in the Oval Office, a White House official said Tuesday. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the president hadn’t yet signed the presidential memorandum.

Nevada Republican John Ensign apologized for having an affair with a member of his campaign staff more than a year ago and says he remains “deeply committed” to his service in the U.S. Senate. In Las Vegas on Tuesday, Ensign called the affair “absolutely the worst thing that I have ever done in my life,” and said he and his wife sought counseling and reconciled.

He didn’t name the staffer or her husband, and took no questions after issuing his statement.

He called the woman and her husband “close friends,” and said that close relationship at a difficult time in his marriage “led me to my inappropriate behavior.”

A shooter fired three rounds from a shotgun at a party bus early Monday morning in the East Village following an apparent road rage incident in La Mesa, but no one was injured in the attack, a police sergeant said.

The shooting occurred while the party bus was stopped at a gas station in the 1600 block of F Street around 1 a.m., according to San Diego police Sgt. Bob Dare.

Several people were on the bus when a white van pulled up and someone from the van got out and fired three shotgun rounds at the front of the bus, Dare said.

The gunman then got back into the van, which sped away on F Street, the sergeant said.The vehicle was described as being a white minivan, possibly a Dodge.It had paper dealer plates, according to Dare.

No description of the shooter was immediately available.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol and Homeland Security officials have arrested a man who they say stole a tractor trailer filled with ammonium nitrate.

The truck was stopped at a gas station off Interstate 95 in Kenly in Johnston County today, said Sgt. Jorge Brewer with the Highway Patrol.

Authorities have arrested Brian Rutledge, 46, of Carrollton, Ohio, and charged him with possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting arrest. He is in the Johnston County jail, Brewer. The 18-wheeler was stolen in Orville, Ohio. Brewer did not know how it was stolen.

The truck was carrying an undisclosed amount of the chemical compound ammonium nitrate, which is commonly used as a fertilizer in farming. It can also be used as an explosive.

Do you really want a deadly robotic chassis being controlled by the brain of a rat? Scientists at University of Reading do. They’ve connected a biological “brain” made of rat neurons to a robot, with a two-way link.

It gets more demented: the robot is controlled via a Bluetooth connection — which means anybody with a cellphone can probably hack its little rat cortex — and the brain is kept inside a bell jar, just like Sylvia Plath’s. Gatineau police responded to a report of an explosion in a park at about 12:15 a.m. Saturday and found that a “homemade bomb” had exploded.

No injuries were reported and there was no damage to property at the park, on St-Onge Street, Gatineau police said.

The bomb was made up of mixed liquids, according to police.

Officers called to the scene found that another bomb had not exploded, so a Sûreté du Québec bomb unit was called, police said.

The officers rendered the second bomb ineffective and cleared the scene by about 7 a.m. Saturday.

US security authorities have conducted a semi-clandestine nuclear fallout drill in the City of New York in order to be prepared “for the worst.”

The NYC Police Department (NYPD) in unison with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) carried out a massive almost-covert anti-nuclear exercise codenamed ‘New York, you have a problem’ in order to gauge the metropolitan promptness in responding to such attacks.

According to an AP report on Friday, hundreds of NYPD officers and FBI agents participated in the drill that involved the detection of a gamma-ray emitting device concealed in the heart of the urban area.

The group was also accompanied by an elite corps of federal weapons specialists who, under a US attorney general mandate, found a simulated “nuclear device” and diffused it.

Commenting on the nature of new threats on the City area including ‘dirty bombs’ and other unconventional explosive devices, head of FBI’s New York office, Joseph Demarest, said, “It’s something we’re very concerned about.”

Reflecting Demarest’s comments, FBI’s counter terrorism supervisor, Don Always, told reporters, “Hopefully, we’ll never have to do this for real.”

“But if we do, we have to do it right the first time,” he went on to say.

Security forces have reportedly tested new hi-tech detection gadgets and other gizmos in the operation.

New York City authorities have frequently expressed concerns over a sudden occurrence of such attacks capable to claim numerous lives.

A dirty bomb is an explosive device equipped with nuclear, chemical or biological containers, which could be blown up without having to use sophisticated nuclear detonators.

The news of the NYC nuclear fallout drill comes in the wake of an assessment last week in which the Missouri Congressman Todd Akin warned of a looming nuclear threat on the US’s West coast cities as adversarial regimes such as North Korea expand their nuclear and rocket launching capabilities.

The 62-year-old Republican Congressman advised the US administration to seriously consider current nuclear issues threatening US security, which demanded a fortified scheme to tackle the potential issues.

What the U.N. owes New York City in fines is in the millions or more

Bad news! This week, the House of Representatives took a significant step forward in strengthening our relationship with the UN. The UN is not our friend but an enemy of America.

By passing the Foreign Relations Authorization Act (HR 2410), developed by Chairman Howard Berman, the House Foreign Affairs Committee is authorizing full payment of all debt the U.S. has accumulated at the United Nations since 1999. This is outrageous as we pay a larger portion then all other nations, with our money and blood.

This bill, demands that the U.S. meet its obligations to the UN helped support, demonstrates Congressional commitment to the UN,and a betrayal of the American People.

Besides addressing U.S. debts to the UN, this comprehensive legislation would:

• Support the U.S. payment of UN dues on time (or at least not 9 months late!); lift the arbitrary legislative cap on peacekeeping contributions; and meet its ongoing financial commitments to the UN and other important international organizations.

• Maintain robust support for the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR); build training capacity to support rapid deployment of UN peacekeepers; and allow the U.S. to join other nations in helping make critically needed helicopters available for UN authorized peacekeeping missions.
• Authorize critical resources for the State Department and USAID to help prevent, mitigate, and peacefully resolve crises; and create new incentives for Foreign Service Officers to serve in posts focusing on multilateral diplomacy and human rights.

But while this is a major defeat more work lies ahead to oppose the United Nations

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee must craft and pass its own bill before any legislation can be sent to the President. To make sure your voices are being heard, the Better World Campaign has met with the Committee to emphasize the need to include UN language in its version of the Foreign Relations Authorization bill.

MORELIA, Mexico - Gunmen opened fire and tossed a grenade at a crowded taco stand in the central Mexican city of Uruapan on Thursday, causing cooking gas tanks to explode and killing a police officer and a 15-year-old boy.

A spokesman for the state prosecutor’s office in Michoacan state said the policeman was shot while eating with a fellow officer.

Before fleeing, the assailants shot two tanks of cooking gas that exploded, burning the teenage taco stand worker to death, the spokesman said on condition of anonymity because his office does not allow him to give his name. Four other people were injured.

KBR Inc. wasted billions of dollars through inefficiencies, lax oversight and poor management of its contract to support U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to an independent, bipartisan panel.

The contract — to provide housing, food, laundry, mail delivery and fuel for U.S. troops — was ultimately worth $31.7 billion, with most of the work being done in Iraq and Kuwait.

“The services could have been delivered for billions of dollars less,” the commission stated in a report released today at a hearing of the House Oversight and Government Reform’s national security panel. “Substantial evidence supports the view” that KBR’s services “cost too much.”

The Wartime Contracting Commission, in its first report since Congress established it last year, gives the most critical assessment to date of the contract that Houston-based KBR, then a unit of Halliburton Co., won in December 2001, shortly after the U.S. invaded Afghanistan.

KBR’s record may be hurting its chances to win work under a new program for awarding contracts to support U.S. troops. That competition, begun in April 2008, pits KBR against Falls Church, Virginia-based DynCorp International Inc. and Irving, Texas- based Fluor Corp. KBR hasn’t won any of the five orders awarded so far, according to the U.S. Army Sustainment Command.

Philadelphia, PA - Operation Rescue is appalled to learn that Philadelphia Women’s Center gave away free abortions on Tuesday as a means of “honoring” slain late-term abortions George Tiller.

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. -The Allegheny County Bomb Squad was called out on Wednesday to investigate two tractor trailers in Somerset County.

It happened in Jenner Township on Green Bridge Rd. just outside of Boswell. WJAC cameras captured bomb squad officials and alcohol, tobacco and firearms agents checking out the trailers which have been sitting in a field just off the road.

Somerset County 911 said investigators were trying to break the locks to get inside the trucks, but at this point, it’s not clear what was found.

The ATF will not comment on the story.

Metropolitan Police officers subjected suspects to waterboarding, according to allegations at the center of a major anti-corruption inquiry, The Times has learned.

The torture claims are part of a wide-ranging investigation which also includes accusations that officers fabricated evidence and stole suspects’ property. It has already led to the abandonment of a drug trial and the suspension of several police officers.

However, senior policing officials are most alarmed by the claim that officers in Enfield, North London, used the controversial CIA interrogation technique to simulate drowning. Scotland Yard is appointing a new borough commander in Enfield in a move that is being seen as an attempt by Sir Paul Stephenson, the Met Commissioner, to enforce a regime of “intrusive supervision”.

The waterboarding claims will fuel the debate about police conduct that has raged in the wake of hundreds of public complaints of brutality at the anti-G20 protests in April.

Wikileaks has released 70 United Nations investigative reports classified “Strictly Confidential”. The reports expose matters from allegations of hundreds of European peace-keepers sexually abusing refugee girls ^[1] to generals in Peru using Swiss bank accounts to engage in multi-million dollar frauds against the UN.

The bulk of the reports were released today with 17 reports relating to Kosovo having being released on 24 Oct 2008.

A number of the reports are both classified “Strictly Confidential” and have selected regions redacted. Often these redacted regions can be “unredacted” by “cut and pasting” the blanked region. On the description page for each report, where possible, Wikileaks has provided a simple text version of the report that includes the redacted information. This controversy came to light when a Fox affiliate in Houston covered the opening of the Houston campaign office for Barack Obama. On one of the walls behind a campaign worker’s desk was a Cuban flag with the image of Che Guevara on it, the Marxist Revolutionary who was a part of the revolution in Cuba that brought Fidel Castro into power.

As of this writing there has not been any order from Obama for the flag to be taken down. His campaign issued a statement that said, “This is a volunteer office that is not in any way controlled by the Obama campaign. We were disappointed to see this picture because it is both offensive to many Cuban-Americans — and Americans of all backgrounds — and because it does not reflect Senator Obama’s views. Barack Obama has been very clear in putting forward a Cuba policy that is based on one principle: freedom for the Cuban people.”

Senator Obama has not called for “no strings attached” diplomatic relations with Cuba but during a debate in November, 2007, with other Democratic presidential candidates he did say that he would be willing to meet with leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea.
