House ethics investigators have been scrutinizing the activities of more than 30 lawmakers and several aides in inquiries about issues including defense lobbying and corporate influence peddling, according to a confidential House ethics committee report prepared in July.
The report appears to have been inadvertently placed on a publicly accessible computer network, and it was provided to The Washington Post by a source not connected to the congressional investigations. The committee said Thursday night that the document was released by a low-level staffer.
The ethics committee is one of the most secretive panels in Congress, and its members and staff members sign oaths not to disclose any activities related to its past or present investigations.
The operation unfolded as the Bush administration was relaxing some domestic intelligence-gathering rules. The F.B.I.’s interpretation of those rules was recently made public when it released, in response to a Freedom of Information lawsuit, its “Domestic Investigations and Operations Guide.”
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A former cashier for The Home Depot who has been wearing a “One nation under God” button on his work apron for more than a year has been fired, he says because of the religious reference. The company claims that expressing such personal beliefs is simply not allowed.
“I’ve worn it for well over a year and I support my country and God,” Trevor Keezor said Tuesday. “I was just doing what I think every American should do, just love my country.”
The American flag button Keezer wore in the Florida store since March 2008 says “One nation under God, indivisible.”
Earlier this month, he began bringing a Bible to read during his lunch break at the store in the rural town of Okeechobee, about 140 miles north of Miami. That’s when he says The Home Depot management told him he would have to remove the button.

Twenty members of the Amiri Guard of the United Arab Emirates are currently undergoing training at Storm Mountain Training Center in Elk Garden. The Guard is essentially an Arabic parallel to the United States Secret Service. It is an elite unit trained to protect officials like the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi from threats.
The element at Storm Mountain is enrolled in an Executive Protection Course where they will train in a variety of counterterrorism skills.

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C.—A gun toting elderly woman said she scared off two home invaders overnight.
It happened around 1:00 am Thursday morning on the 1100 block of Audubon Circle, that’s off Belvedere Clearwater Road.
The elderly female victim says two people, armed with guns, broke in her home by kicking in her door.
She says she was not able to get a close look at the suspects, but told officers she was able to scare them off with her own gun.
The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation. They called bloodhounds out to the scene to track the suspects but so far, the men are still on the run.
Anti-BNP protesters breached security and broke into BBC Television Centre this evening ahead of Nick Griffin’s controversial appearance on Question Time.
Around 30 people rushed through the main gates of the BBC’s broadcasting citadel in West London. Ten were dragged out of the car park by police officers but at least 20 more made it inside the building where the leader of the British National Party will take part in the political panel show tonight.
Backed by chants of “BBC shame on you” and “Nazi scum off the streets” the small gang of protesters, believed to be predominantly from Unite Against Fascism, broke away from the main group and ran on to BBC property. State officials in Oklahoma and Kansas are planning an emergency exercise to test interstate coordination in case of a “stop livestock movement” order.
The drill will be Oct. 22 and is based on a simulated outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.
Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry spokesman Jack Carson says agents will check traffic on Highway 83 north of Turpin in Oklahoma. Another checkpoint will be at the intersection of Highways 160 and 183 near Sitka, Kan.
Carson says animal health, agriculture, law enforcement, transportation and emergency management officials from both states will take part in the drill.
The exercise is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

A frighteningly similar scenario is now on the horizon with the news that the CIA’s investment arm In-Q-Tel is putting cash into Visible Technologies, a company that monitors the output of social media, in order to “Read your blog posts, keep track of your Twitter updates — even check out your book reviews on Amazon,” reports Wired News.
However, the prospect of the CIA closely monitoring social networking websites, whose content largely comprises of inane gossip and sophomoric blabber, shows just how afraid the establishment is of rising popular opposition to their agenda.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — A South Carolina man accused of threatening to kill President George W. Bush has pleaded guilty to plotting to use biological weapons to attack other government officials and destroy the Navy brig near Charleston.
Court records show Steven Cucuzzella, who is from North Charleston, pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to mailing a threat to blow up the Naval Brig in Hanahan.
Cucuzzella had been charged with making a threat against the president, but that charge was dropped.
Cucuzzella has been held in the same Navy brig he threatened to destroy since his arrest earlier this year and will be sentenced later. He faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

ALBANY - A Republican gubernatorial primary candidate brought his ideas on government, the Second Amendment, taxes and abortion to Albany seeking voter support Tuesday night.
Ray McBerry, 41, of Henry County, spoke for more than an hour to an audience of about 20 people at Doublegate Country Club. People gave him a standing ovation after he talked about standing up to the federal government if he were elected governor.
“I’ve been a Republican all my life,” McBerry said. “But I am not a middle-of-the-road Republican, a moderate Republican, I am a traditional conservative Republican.”
The federal government is out of control, McBerry said. It endangers liberties of Georgians and the brakes must be applied, he added.
“They are running our lives, telling us how to live,” McBerry said, “and they are asking us to pay the bill for it.”Read more click here

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, FLA.- The Continental United States NORAD Region, a geographical component of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, will conduct a three-day homeland defense exercise, Falcon Dart, beginning Oct. 14 along the eastern seaboard and in New England.
This exercise is designed to train CONRs intercept and identification operations and will involve fighters out of Barnes Air National Guard Base, Mass., Jacksonville ANG, Fla., Homestead Air Reserve Base, Fla., and aircraft from other federal agencies.
Residents may hear aircraft noise and see aircraft flying at various times throughout the day.
The Department of Justice has finally admitted it in court papers: the nation’s telecom companies are an arm of the government — at least when it comes to secret spying.
Fortunately, a judge says that relationship isn’t enough to squash a rights group’s open records request for communications between the nation’s telecoms and the feds.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation wanted to see what role telecom lobbying of Justice Department played when the government began its year-long, and ultimately successful, push to win retroactive immunity for AT&T and others being sued for unlawfully spying on American citizens.
The feds argued that the documents showing consultation over the controversial telecom immunity proposal weren’t subject to the Freedom of Information Act since they were protected as “intra-agency” records:

Dolton Illinois — 15-year-old Marshawn Pitts was brutally beaten by a Dolton police officer, because his shirt wasnt tucked in. Pitts was a student at the Academy for Learning High School in Dolton, which claims to be a school for children with learning disabilities. In this video, the officer, whose name has not been released, is seen slamming Pitts into lockers, and then slamming him facedown on the floor. The officer then puts the 15-year-old boy into a dangerous chokehold. When all was said and done, Pitts had a busted lip and a broken nose. Pitts is now suing the school and the Dolton Police Department.
