In the spring, the futurists at Darpa rethought troop transport. AAI Corporation, a Maryland-based aerospace and defense company, won a $3.05 million contract with Darpa to see if it the technology behind the Transformer can, well, get off the ground, Aviation Weekreports. Based on so-called “compound helicopter” technology that the company is developing with Carter Aviation Technologies, the gist is that AAI’s design for the Transformer envisions it to carry four soldiers on the road as a car, but the rotor blades on top allow it to take off vertically into the air. The car’s takeoff functions are supposed to be automated, so soldiers or marines don’t have to be aviators to get it off the ground.
That’s not all. As Danger Room emerita Sharon Weinberger reported in June, it releases DeLorean-like retractable wings, allowing it to fly faster than a conventional helicopter. “Envision a Humvee-like vehicle with wings that fold out from the side and attach just above the rear door,” AAI Vice President Steven Reid told Weinberger. DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — A team of federal agents has been stopping tractor-trailers on Interstate 20 just west of Atlanta, inspecting each truck as it passed through a weigh station, and Channel 2 has learned its part of a counter-terrorism operation.Channel 2’s Linda Stouffer reported a flashing sign on the interstate directed the trucks to pull into a state-owned inspection station near Lee Road in Douglas County at the height of the evening commute.Channel 2 Action News confirmed that agents from several federal agencies, including Homeland Security, the Department of Transportation, and the Transportation Security Administration were involved. A student disguised with a ski mask and armed with an AK-47 assault rifle terrorized the University of Texas at Austin campus Tuesday morning, firing five shots on campus before killing himself on the sixth floor of the main library, authorities said.
Police initially searched for a second suspect because witnesses gave differing descriptions of the man. But after searching the campus for a few hours, officials declared that the student had acted alone.
“We did get multiple descriptions, and we have to make sure that he didn’t have other people with him,” University of Texas Police Chief Robert E. Dahlstrom said. “We do not feel like there were, but we have to check out every lead.”
The alleged shooter, who was found on the sixth floor of the main Perry-Castaneda Library with apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds, had not been identified Tuesday afternoon but was a UT student, said Robin Gerrow, the school’s assistant vice president of public affairs.
FBI agents and several supervisors cheated on an exam about new rules for terrorism and criminal investigations and for collecting foreign intelligence, according to a U.S. Justice Department report released on Monday.

WASHINGTON - Federal law enforcement and national security officials are preparing to seek sweeping new regulations of the Internet, arguing that their ability to wiretap criminal and terrorism suspects is “going dark” as people increasingly communicate online instead of by telephone.
Essentially, officials want Congress to require all services that enable communications – including encrypted e-mail transmitters such as BlackBerry, social networking websites such as Facebook and software that allows direct “peer-to-peer” messaging such as Skype — to be technically capable of complying if served with a wiretap order. Sturbridge and state police are investigating a “rudimentary” bomb that walkers found in a public area off of the Old Sturbridge Village access road this morning. The walkers called police shortly after 9 a.m. to report a black cylindrical object.
Police cordoned off the area, and the state police bomb squad neutralized the device. The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and state police from the Sturbridge barracks also responded.
Police will take the bomb to the state police laboratory for further analysis.

MASON - Richard Scott McLeod, a 48-year-old Brighton Township man found earlier this month with bomb-making paraphernalia and a “military-style” bulletproof vest, waived his preliminary hearing today in 55th District Court. COLUMBIA, S.C. — Police say a South Carolina high school freshman shot at an on-campus officer and also planted several pipe bombs in the school.
Police in Horry County in the northeast part of the state say the student confronted school resource officer Erik Karney with a gun Tuesday. The gun fired when the two got into a struggle.
Karney wasn’t hit directly but was injured after the bullet struck a wall. Karney took the gun from the student and took him into custody.
Students were evacuated to a football field while bomb squads removed and disarmed the pipe bombs.
The Socastee High School freshman has not been identified because of his age.
A prosecutor says he expects to charge the student with attempted murder.
In a surprise move just moments after apologizing to Muslims worldwide the Pope has apologized to Satan.

Benedict XVI had been under pressure to make a personal apology following a controversial statements that he and the Catholic Church have made in the past several hundred years.

Vatican bank chief investigated over money laundering claims, in an unprecedented move, judge freezes €23m held in account at financial institution with close church links. The Vatican has a long history of withholding co-operation from Italian investigators seeking access to its bank’s books. The IOR was involved in a major scandal in 1982 arising from the fraudulent bankruptcy of Banco Ambrosiano, then Italy’s largest private bank.
The head of the Vatican bank has formally been placed under investigation in an inquiry into a suspected violation of Italy’s money-laundering laws, judicial sources said today.
At the same time, a judge in Rome ordered a freeze on €23m (£19.5m) held in an account opened by the Vatican bank, the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR), at another financial institution in the Italian capital. It was thought to be the first time such action had been authorised against the IOR in Italy.
Since last September, the Bank of Italy has classified the Vatican bank as a non-EU institution whose dealings with other banks are thus subject to especially close scrutiny.
The sources said that last Wednesday, on the eve of Pope Benedict’s departure for Britain, a unit of the Italian revenue guard alerted prosecutors to an anomaly in an account owned by the IOR at the Rome branch of Credito Artigiano, which has close historic ties to the Catholic church.
ORLANDO, Fla. — An 84-year-old man, who suffered a broken neck after a confrontation with an Orlando police officer, was in surgery Monday.
The incident began when a police officer was dispatched to The Caboose bar on North Orange Avenue south of Princeton Street (see map) around 11:00pm Saturday, after reports that Daniel Daley was arguing with a tow truck driver.
Witnesses said the World War II veteran touched Officer Travis Lamonte several times during the argument and, in response, the officer slammed him to the ground.
“All of a sudden, an officer did some kind of a defensive movement, hip-checked him and then pile-drived him to the pavement,” eyewitness Tim Scott told WFTV. “I actually thought he was going to be dead. The way he, you could hear his head hit the pavement from across the street.”
The Inter-Press Sevice (IPS) is reporting that the head administrator of the Mexican Superintendency of Tax Administration, Raul Diaz, has confirmed that his government is building a wall in the state of Chiapas, along the Mexican/Guatemalan border.
The official reason is to stop contraband from coming into Mexico, but as Diaz admitted: “It could also prevent the free passage of illegal immigrants.”

A high-ranking officer inside the office of Arizona’s controversial Sheriff Joe Arpaio has laid out a detailed case alleging potentially criminal corruption at the highest levels of the department.
In a 63-page memorandum sent to Arpaio and obtained by Phoenix’s Channel 12 News and the Arizona Republic, Deputy Chief Frank Munnell alleges that the department’s number-two officer, Chief Deputy Dave Hendershott, used the department’s anti-corruption unit to spy on political rivals.
Munnell’s memo “describes an oppressive work environment in which Hendershott is alleged to have threatened and retaliated against subordinates who questioned him and browbeat others into refusing to cooperate with federal and state investigations into the Sheriff’s Office,” reports the Republic.
The deputy chief reportedly threatened to “machine-gun” his subordinates when they balked at carrying out a politically-motivated surveillance, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Source: News Channel 5 HOHENWALD, Tenn. – A bomb scare forced evacuations in Lewis County on Friday. Police said a man walked into a business with a briefcase and said he had a bomb.
Holenwald police called Columbia’s bomb squad into action. They arrived with their robot. The robot busted open the briefcase, but found nothing but papers.
During the height of the situation, 15 stores were evacuated downtown.
The man with the briefcase was charged with resisting arrest, disturbing the peace and a prohibited weapon.
A Michigan State Police bomb squad defused two different incidents involving explosives in Isabella County Friday.
The team from Bridgeport deactivated a pipe bomb found in a Chippewa Township mobile home park, then disposed of some old blasting caps that had been brought to the Sheriff’s Department.
Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski said 40 to 50 people were evacuated from their homes in the Maple View East trailer park on East M-20, about six miles east of Mt. Pleasant, after the pipe bomb was reported. (more…)
Source: AP BURBANK, Calif. – Police have arrested a man they say had a fake gun and flammable liquids when he crashed his car through a barrier at Warner Bros. studios near Los Angeles.
Burbank police say 43-year-old Michael Rodriguez-Cintron, of New York, drove his Camaro up to a wooden gate Friday and plowed through it without stopping. He was arrested while roaming a back lot of the studio.
No one was injured in the crash. Lt. John Dilibert said that inside Rodriguez-Cintron’s car, police found a duffel bag with several bottles of unidentified flammable material, ignition sources and the replica gun, prompting them to call in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad to investigate. Rodriguez-Cintron is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday 09-21-2010.
