After identifying him as an accused sex criminal, the News of the World reports. Samson Obama, a Kenya-based cell phone salesman, tried to enter Britain in January on his way to the president’s Washington inauguration. But immigration officials identified him as a man arrested for an attempted sex attack in Berkshire. Police say Samson had followed several girls, including a 13-year-old, and tried to assault one in a cafe. When arrested, he gave officers a fake ID and the British address of his mother—the former wife of Barack Obama Sr. Samson was never charged and left the country. His recent run-in with immigration officers “was obviously an extremely sensitive issue,” a British government source said.

WASHINGTON — Cyberspies have penetrated the U.S. electrical grid and left behind software programs that could be used to disrupt the system, according to current and former national-security officials.

The spies came from China, Russia and other countries, these officials said, and were believed to be on a mission to navigate the U.S. electrical system and its controls. The intruders haven’t sought to damage the power grid or other key infrastructure, but officials warned they could try during a crisis or war.

“The Chinese have attempted to map our infrastructure, such as the electrical grid,” said a senior intelligence official. “So have the Russians.”

The espionage appeared pervasive across the U.S. and doesn’t target a particular company or region, said a former Department of Homeland Security official. “There are intrusions, and they are growing,” the former official said, referring to electrical systems. “There were a lot last year.”
Many of the intrusions were detected not by the companies in charge of the infrastructure but by U.S. intelligence agencies, officials said. Intelligence officials worry about cyber attackers taking control of electrical facilities, a nuclear power plant or financial networks via the Internet.

Authorities investigating the intrusions have found software tools left behind that could be used to destroy infrastructure components, the senior intelligence official said. He added, “If we go to war with them, they will try to turn them on.”

NEWTON, Kan. | A 38-year-old south-central Kansas man has been charged in connection with making a threat against former President George W. Bush.

Eric W. Bradley, of Newton, has been charged with one count of making a threat against a former president.

A Colorado man who works for Evangelical group Focus on the Family has been arrested after he solicited sex online from an investigator posing as a teenage girl, police have said. “Juan Alberto Ovalle, 42, thought he was corresponding with a girl under the age of 15, but instead it was undercover officers with the Jefferson County district attorney’s office, according to court documents,” reported the Denver Post. “…Ovalle was arrested on April 3rd when he drove to an undisclosed location in Lakewood to meet the person he believed to be a teen for sexual purposes,” reported Colorado’s News Channel 13.

MADISON, Wis. — The state Capitol building was evacuated on Monday afternoon after a plane that was apparently stolen from Canada had flown into Wisconsin airspace. Officials later called off the evacuation of the Capitol, but Wisconsin Air National Guard pilots were tracking the aircraft.

Bacteria that can convert electricity into methane could help solve one of the biggest problems with renewable energy – its unreliability compared to the steady output of polluting fossil-fuel power stations.

Wind power is capricious, while solar cell output drops off at night or on cloudy days. That fluctuating output poses big problems for electricity grids that rely on steady levels throughout the day. Proposals to deal with the ups and downs of green power supply have included better batteries or redesigning the electricity grid.

An intriguing new idea involves “feeding” surplus power to bacteria instead, which combine it with carbon dioxide to create methane. That could then be stored and burned when needed. The method is sustainable too, as the carbon is taken from the atmosphere, not released from long-term storage in oil or coal.

Five Flights Reported Laser Beams This Month

SEATAC, WA. — Once again a laser reportedly has been shined into a plane landing at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Airport spokesman Terri Ann Betancourt tells KOMO Television the report comes from pilots on Alaska Airlines Flight 487 from San Diego. They say a laser was flashed into the cockpit shortly before a safe landing at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Betancourt says investigators believe it came from about 2 miles north and slightly west of the airport, near the source of previous laser reports.

Pilots on five flights reported laser beams earlier this month, four on the same night. A dozen laser reports were filed on Feb. 22.

On March 6, 24-year-old Christopher Charles Saunders of Burien was arrested in the laser case. He was later released and no charges have been filed.

OAKLAND, Calif. — A man wanted for violating his parole killed three veteran police officers and gravely wounded another in two shootings Saturday, the first after a routine traffic stop and the second after a massive manhunt ended in gunfire, authorities said. The gunman was also killed.

“It’s in these moments that words are extraordinarily inadequate,” said Mayor Ron Dellums at a somber news conference announcing the slayings. It was the first time in the history of the Oakland Police Department that three officers were killed in the line of duty in the same day.

The violence began when two officers stopped a Buick sedan in east Oakland just after 1 p.m., Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said. The driver opened fire, killing one officer and gravely wounding the another.

The gunman then fled on foot, police said, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies. Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland closed to traffic.

Officers checking on an anonymous tip found the suspect barricaded inside an apartment building at around 3:30 p.m., police said.

Police said the gunman fired an assault rifle at officers who came into the building to arrest him. Two members of the SWAT team were killed and a third was grazed by a bullet, police said.

Acting Oakland police Chief Howard Jordan said police returned fire, killing a man they identified as 26-year-old Lovelle Mixon of Oakland.

The slain officers were identified as Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, who was killed at the first shooting. The officers killed at the second location were Sgt. Ervin Romans, 43, and Sgt. Daniel Sakai, 35. Officer John Hege, 41, was in grave condition.

Reached by telephone late Saturday, Hege’s father, Dr. John Hege said, “He had an injury to his brain … and it’s not clear he can survive. … It is a stunning thing to face, although we were always aware of the risks.”

Hege, a retired physician from neighboring Piedmont, said his son loved being an authority figure and worked well with people. He was an Eagle Scout. He played high school football and wrestled. He umpired and coached even as a youth, and joined the Oakland Police Department reserves.

After graduating from St, Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif., he taught high school physical education for a few years in nearby Hayward before joining the police department a decade ago.

He recently became a motorcyle traffic control officer, Dr. Hege said, adding, “He liked excitement.”

As for the slain shooting suspect, the father said, “The man was evidently terribly desperate. It is a sad story…”

Grieving officers at the police station hugged and consoled each other.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said it was a tragic day.

“All four officers dedicated their lives to public safety and selflessly worked to protect the people of Oakland,” he said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those lost, the Oakland Police Department and law enforcement officers throughout California during this difficult time.”

Police said Mixon wielded two different weapons. One gun was used at the first scene and an assault rifle was used at the apartment building where he was hiding.

“(Mixon) was on parole and he had a warrant out for his arrest for violating that parole. And he was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon,” said Oakland police Deputy Chief Jeffery Israel.

Police did not say why the officers had initially stopped the suspect, other than to call the stop routine.

People lingered at the scene of the first shooting. About 20 bystanders taunted police.

Tension between police and the community has risen steadily since the fatal shooting of unarmed 22-year-old Oscar Grant by a transit police officer at an Oakland train station on Jan. 1.

That former Bay Area Rapid Transit officer, Johannes Mehserle, has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday. Violent protests erupted on the streets of Oakland in the weeks after Grant’s death, further inflaming tensions.

Officer deaths are nothing new in Oakland. The memorial wall in the Oakland Police headquarters shows that at least 47 officers died before Saturday. The wall shows the last officer killed in Oakland was in January of 1999.

The governor’s office said Schwarzenegger would fly to Oakland on Sunday from Washington, D.C., to meet with police and Mayor Dellums to “get a firsthand account of what’s happening.” Both state Attorney General Jerry Brown and Dellums were at Saturday’s news conference.

A group of Oakland ministers went to the hospital to offer prayers and condolences to the family members of the injured officers and the dozens of Oakland police officers who gathered there.

They said that on Sunday morning they would urge their parishioners not to let the event tear the city apart.

Pastor Raymond Lankford, executive director of Healthy Oakland, urged people to show support for the officers and their families.

“What officers do, that’s a tough job,” Lankford said. “They need love, they need support. They need to know the community is behind them.”

Armchair travelers wearing the device will be able to hear the roar of lions on safari, smell the flowers of an Alpine meadow or feel the heat of the Caribbean sun on their face - all from the comfort of their sitting room.

The device will also allow people to greet friends and family on the other side of the world as if they were in same room, and to immerse themselves in fantasy worlds.

Seen the YouTube video that shows a guy cracking open his new DTV converter box, only to find a tiny camera and microphone hidden inside? Where’s my tin foil hat?
Wired has the scoop on the popular YouTube video, which was first posted last week and has racked up more than 230,000 views so far.

In the 97-second video (which you can find right here), we see a shaky-cam shot of a new Magnavox DTV converter box—the kind you’d need to receive over-the-air digital TV signals on an older analog TV.

The guy behind the camera explains that a friend warned him that “they put cameras in these things … you set it on your TV and someone, the government or whoever, has the ability to spy on you.”

The man then opens the DTV box, points at a black box soldered on the circuit board, and proclaims that “lo and behold … as you can see, right here, is the camera unit.” He goes on to point out a flat, pea-sized component that’s the “microphone,” and promises to check out some different makes of DTV boxes to see “if this is an ongoing trend.”

Ah ha, I knew it! This whole DTV transition thing has smelled fishy from the get-go, and now we know why: These boxes are nothing more than Trojan horses designed so “they” watch our every move. Right?

Well, hold on. Wired tracked down the creator of the video—a 28-year-old software engineer named Adam Chronister—who now admits that yes, it’s just a hoax. No tiny camera, no microphone—although Chronister claims that a pal did, indeed, tell him the rumor about the hidden DTV camera.

So—know anyone who got fooled? Think the hoax is just a “smoke screen” (as Wired puts it) for the real DTV conspiracy?

IBM has filed a patent (US 7484451) for Bionic Body Armor, that could essentially allow us to dodge bullets like Neo in The Matrix. The armor would scan areas for incoming projectiles and when one is detected the system would deliver a shock to the muscles causing a swift reflexive action away from the projectile.
