Man charged with threatening to take machine gun to the White House to kill Obama
BANGOR Maine | A 60-year-old Berks County man remained in jail Thursday (11-12-09 ) after he threatened to take a machine gun to the White House to kill President Barack Obama, borough police said.
Richard Schoudt, of the 100 block of Mountain Village Drive in Longswamp Township, Pa., walked into Bangor Child Care in the 200 block of South Fourth Street about 10:50 a.m. Wednesday and asked for directions to Bangor Area High School, police said.
JoAnn Carcione, owner of Bangor Child Care, said Schoudt stopped in looking for directions to the school district because he said he needed a copy of his diploma for veteran’s benefits.
Carcione said Schoudt told her he felt he was being treated unfairly by the government.
“All I got today was a free cup of coffee,” Carcione said Schoudt told her.
Eventually, Schoudt threatened to take a machine gun to the White House and meet with the president, police said.
“At no point did I feel uneasy,” Carcione said. “When he made the statement that he did, I had to call it.”
Police said they found Schoudt outside Bangor Area High School in Upper Mount Bethel Township. He was arrested without incident by Bangor police, they said.
Schoudt was charged with making terroristic threats, harassment and disorderly conduct. He was sent to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail.
The FBI and Secret Service were notified, according to police.
Robert Slama, special agent-in-charge of the Secret Service’s Philadelphia office, declined to comment on Wednesday’s incident.
